Design as an Experience — The Studio Amateur Journey

5 min readstudioamateur

Every space begins with an idea.

Sometimes, it begins with a simple thought: I want my home to feel different.

Sometimes, it begins with a blank piece of land, an empty room, an office waiting to take shape, or an old space that no longer feels like it belongs to the people who use it.

But between that first thought and the finished space lies a journey.

At Studio Amateur, we believe design is not simply about making a space look beautiful. It is about understanding the people, emotions, functions, memories, and aspirations that give a space its meaning.

A room is not just a room.
A home is not just walls and furniture.
A building is not just structure.

Every space has a story waiting to be discovered.

Where Every Design Begins

The first step is always listening.

Before lines are drawn and materials are selected, we try to understand what the space means to its people. How will they use it? What do they need? What do they imagine? What kind of atmosphere do they want to come home to, work in, or share with others?

These conversations become the foundation of the design.

An idea may begin as a few words, a reference image, a sketch, a colour, or even a feeling. Our role is to transform that abstract idea into something tangible without losing the emotion behind it.

Because good design is not about imposing an idea.

It is about discovering the right one.

From Imagination to Form

Once the vision becomes clearer, the process begins to take shape.

Plans are developed. Proportions are considered. Circulation, functionality, lighting, materials, colours and details begin to come together.

Two-dimensional drawings give structure to the idea, while three-dimensional visualisation allows the client to experience the space before it exists.

This stage is where imagination starts becoming visible.

A blank floor plan slowly becomes a home.

An empty commercial space begins to develop an identity.

An exterior begins to communicate with its surroundings.

And an architectural structure begins to feel like a place rather than simply a building.

Designing for Different Stories

No two spaces tell the same story.

A residential project is shaped around everyday life—comfort, privacy, warmth, family and personal expression.

A commercial space has another language. It needs to communicate identity, functionality and experience while responding to the people who enter it.

Architecture considers the relationship between structure, environment and human movement.

Exterior design extends that experience beyond the walls, creating a connection between the building and its surroundings.

And sometimes, a space needs something more—a creative element, an artwork, a distinctive detail or an unexpected visual gesture that gives it character.

That is where design becomes more than decoration.

It becomes expression.

Beyond the Surface

We believe that beauty alone is not enough.

A beautiful space that does not work is incomplete.

A functional space without character can feel lifeless.

The balance lies somewhere between the two.

Our approach brings together aesthetics and functionality, form and purpose, creativity and practicality. Every material, colour, texture, proportion and detail has the opportunity to contribute to the experience of a space.

The goal is not to fill a space.

The goal is to give it meaning.

The Journey Continues Into Execution

A design only truly comes alive when the drawings leave the screen and enter the real world.

This is where ideas meet materials, measurements, craftsmanship, construction and countless small decisions.

The perfectly rendered image becomes an actual wall.

A line on a drawing becomes a piece of furniture.

A colour selected on a screen meets natural light.

A concept becomes something people can walk through, touch, use and experience.

This transition from concept to reality is one of the most important parts of the journey. It requires attention to detail, coordination and a clear understanding of the original design intention.

Because the final space should not simply resemble the drawing.

It should carry the feeling behind it.

SS IconCreating Spaces That Feel Personal

At the heart of every project is a simple idea:

The space should feel like it belongs to you.

Trends change. Materials change. Styles evolve.

But a meaningful space has something more lasting—a sense of identity.

That identity may come from a carefully chosen texture, a familiar colour, a piece of art, a connection with nature, an architectural gesture, or simply the way sunlight enters a room in the morning.

These details may seem small, but together they create an atmosphere.

And atmosphere is what turns a designed space into an experienced space.

More Than a Design Studio

Studio Amateur brings together different aspects of design to create complete spatial experiences—from interior and architectural thinking to exterior development, renovation and artistic expression.

But behind every service is the same philosophy:

Listen. Understand. Imagine. Design. Build. Experience.

Because design is not a single moment.

It is a process.

It is a conversation between people and space, between imagination and reality, between what exists and what could exist.

And when that conversation is done well, the result is something more than a finished project.

It becomes a place with a story.

From Ideas to Experiences

Every project starts somewhere.

A conversation.
A sketch.
A question.
A dream.

From there, it grows through ideas, drawings, materials, craftsmanship and countless decisions until, eventually, it becomes a space that can be lived in, worked in, shared and remembered.

That is the journey we believe design should take.

At Studio Amateur, we do not simply design spaces.

We create experiences shaped by the people who inhabit them.

And every new project is another story waiting to be designed.
